New Home, New Locks

With all of the excitement of buying a new home, you must not forget that you must do more than just decorate and furnish your home—but also invest in new locks and home security features. Even if the locks are sound, advanced—and even if they are fairly new, they must be changed. Here’s why.

There May Still Be Sets Of Keys Floating Around

http://www.actionlocksmiths.caThere could be multiple sets of keys floating around from previous tenants, real estate agents, and vendors or contractors, who might not even know there is a new owner. Change the locks and remain confident that now only you and your family have access to your home.

Upgrade To A More Convenient And Advanced Lock

You might be pleasantly surprised at the new and innovative options now available in convenient high-security locks. Consider keyless entry with digital locks or biometric fingerprint access. If you prefer a key, consider installing a master key system that provides one key that unlocks all doors on your property. For added security add a lock to your mailbox, or change the lock on your current mailbox. In fact, you might even need to upgrade some or all of your exterior doors. Your locksmith will advise you on your best options.

Every New Homeowner Should Have A Designated Toronto Locksmith

Aside from changing the locks on your new home, every homeowner should have a designated locksmith they can turn to when in need of general, last minute, and emergency locksmith needs. In most cases, your need for a locksmith will be unplanned. From broken keys, damaged locks, burglary, tenant change, or untimely lost locks—you need to have someone you can turn to.

Even if you don’t need new locks now, take a moment to add Action Locksmiths to your contacts list now. Their phone number is 416-261-1422.

What Should You Keep Locked In Your Home Safe?

http://www.actionlocksmiths.caWhether you rent, own, or live in a college dorm—you should seriously consider the benefits of keeping your valuables in a safe or lock box. What you keep under lock and key is entirely up to you, but there are a few items that are more vulnerable or valuable than others.

What Should You Keep In Your Home Safe?

Below is a list of some of the most common items to keep locked in your safe:

Extra cash and emergency credit cards
Jewelry and heirlooms
Passport and copy of all ID
Vital documents—birth certificate, marriage license, will, insurance, etc.
Contracts and business papers
Small collectibles like coins or stamps
Spare keys to home and cars
A copy of all passwords and codes

You Have Many Options To Choose From

The options in safes and lock boxes are endless. Both are available in a variety of sizes, with a variety of features and functions. Generally speaking, safes are more secure, because they are more challenging to breach, but also because they are less mobile. That being said, the innovative options in lock boxes allow you to hide items in plain sight—which is perfect for dorm rooms and shared living spaces.

Do your homework before you buy, and make sure that your safe or lock box has the features you require. As a general rule of thumb, higher security safes cost more. Placement is also key. Ideally, you want your safe to be installed in a wall or closet—but if you rent, this may not be an option. Either way, the goal is to be inconspicuous.

Don’t Forget To Upgrade Your Safe Locks

Just as with any other lock, you should periodically change and upgrade the locks on your home safe. Action Locksmiths is available to perform combination changes on all of your locks and safes—as well as a full range of residential locksmith services for Toronto home and business owners.

What Is Your Home Lockout Plan?

Every home-owner should be prepared with a lockout plan that they can turn to in case they are locked out. This plan should include what to if the entire family is locked out, or if one of the kids is locked out when getting home from school. Below are a few things to consider when putting together your home lockout plan.

Spare Sets Of Keys

First on the list, consider who you can keep a spare set of keys with, such as a trusted friend of family member. Also consider who has a spare set of keys you can pick up, such as a contractor, pet sitter, or old room mate. Call or stop by to pick-up your spare set, but don’t forget to return the key so that you can call again if you need to.

Hide A Key Externally

You can hide a key externally, but not somewhere too obvious. There are many hide-a-key products on the market, but thieves know what to look for, so consider hiding your hide-a-key somewhere remote. In other words, not next to your front door. A few great places to consider include behind a shrub, inside a potted plant, or … you could also place a coded lock box somewhere secure.
Make Sure Your Kids Know Who To Call

Make sure that your kids know what to do when locked out, such as who to call, or what neighbour’s house they can go to until you come home. Talk to them about the importance of asking for help, otherwise they may try to take things into their own hands. For example, they might attempt to pick your lock, or climb in through an open window.

Have A Locksmith Programmed In Your Phone

If you can’t access a spare set of keys, or your locks are broken or damaged you will need to call a residential locksmith to help you get back in and to repair or replace any broken or damaged locks.

What To Do When You Are Locked Out Of Your House

We have all been there. We arrive home, only to find that our keys are nowhere in sight. Try to remain calm, and turn to the 3 tips below to get back in your home safe and sound.

Check All Of Your Doors And Windows

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca

As careful as you and your family may be when it comes to securing your home, you may not be quite as careful as you imagine. Before you get too stressed out, take a walk around your home to see if you can easily open or get into any of your first floor windows or doors. Keep safety top of mind, and do not attempt to crawl through a window that is not safe, sound, or on ground level.

Take A Few Minutes

Before you really begin stressing out, take a few minute to think about who you can call. You might have a spare set of keys with a neighbour, friend, or family member. Also consider any contractors you might be able to reach out to, such as your cleaning service, babysitter, or pet sitter. Also check with other family members to see if they might have placed a hide-a-key somewhere that you are unaware of.

What To Do If Your Key Gets Stuck In The Lock

It will happen to us all at one time or another; you slide your key into your door lock—and it sticks. Maybe you are still able to open your door, but the key won’t come out. Or maybe the key won’t even turn to unlock your door. Or maybe the key breaks off in the lock entirely. As a residential locksmith in Scarborough, we have seen it all. Turn to the tips below to remove your stuck key.

Don’t Force It

This is one instance where strength will not serve you well. If you try to force your key to turn or slide out of the lock, you run the risk of your key breaking off in the lock—or of further damaging the lock.

Try Some WD-40

Begin by spraying some WD-40 into the lock chamber. This may be enough to safely remove your key, but keep in mind that you still need to have your lock repaired or replaced. No WD-40? Try a spray cooking oil instead.

If Your Key Breaks Off In The Lock

For a quick fix, grab a pair of tweezers and try to remove your key. If this doesn’t work, your key will need to be removed by a professional. There are a few factors that can lead to a key breaking off in your lock:

Using a bent key

Using an old/worn key

Worn or faulty lock hardware

24-Hour Residential Locksmith

Even if you are able to remove your stuck or broken key, you will want to reach out to a professional locksmith to assess the condition of your lock. Your stuck or broken key may be a sign of a faulty chamber, so you want to have it repaired ASAP.
