Should You Install Your New Locks Yourself?

If you are somewhat mechanically inclined, you may be tempted to upgrade and install your locks yourself. While you may indeed be able to complete the installation, there a few benefits of hiring a locksmith that you might not have yet considered.

Access To Commercial Locks

While standard home improvement stores carry a variety of locks and lock hardware, they simply do not have access to the range of commercial locks that we do at Action Locksmiths. This includes both brands available only to professionals, as well as key less entry systems—such as fingerprint access or digital locks

Locks aside, you may want to improve your home security by switching to a master key system in your home or office—or by investing in commercial keys that can only be duplicated by a professional.

Locksmiths Know How To Work With A Variety Of Doors

Professional Expertise

A professional will do more than install the new locks you require, but will help you to determine which solutions will best meet your security needs. This includes which types of locks to invest in, properly securing back doors, and if the door or door frame is sound.

What To Do If Your Key Gets Stuck In The Lock

It will happen to us all at one time or another; you slide your key into your door lock—and it sticks. Maybe you are still able to open your door, but the key won’t come out. Or maybe the key won’t even turn to unlock your door. Or maybe the key breaks off in the lock entirely. As a residential locksmith in Scarborough, we have seen it all. Turn to the tips below to remove your stuck key.

Don’t Force It

This is one instance where strength will not serve you well. If you try to force your key to turn or slide out of the lock, you run the risk of your key breaking off in the lock—or of further damaging the lock.

Try Some WD-40

Begin by spraying some WD-40 into the lock chamber. This may be enough to safely remove your key, but keep in mind that you still need to have your lock repaired or replaced. No WD-40? Try a spray cooking oil instead.

If Your Key Breaks Off In The Lock

For a quick fix, grab a pair of tweezers and try to remove your key. If this doesn’t work, your key will need to be removed by a professional. There are a few factors that can lead to a key breaking off in your lock:

Using a bent key

Using an old/worn key

Worn or faulty lock hardware

24-Hour Residential Locksmith

Even if you are able to remove your stuck or broken key, you will want to reach out to a professional locksmith to assess the condition of your lock. Your stuck or broken key may be a sign of a faulty chamber, so you want to have it repaired ASAP.

Action Locksmiths is a 24-hour residential locksmith serving the Scarborough community. Call us the next time you have any problems with your locks or keys.

Is It Time To Add A Few More Locks?

The main entry and exits to your home or business are sure to be secured with your lock hardware of choice—but you might be in need of high-security locks in a few more places. Below are some common places that we suggest adding entirely new locks.

Mail Box Locks

Adding a lock to your mailbox will ensure that your mail is secure. It will also ease your mind if you are out of town for an extended period of time. Locked mailboxes are also an excellent addition to any building with multiple tenants—both commercial or residential.

Added Security For Individual Rooms

If you have a home office, a business with a room that stores sensitive data, or requires restricted access—internal digital locks or biometric fingerprint access are an excellent way to manage entry.

Locks For Drawers Or File Cabinets

It is easy to upgrade or replace the lock hardware that comes standard with your file cabinets or desk drawers. Changing drawer or cabinet locks is always a good idea when there is the change in management, or if you have purchased your office supplies secondhand.

Replace Padlocked Areas

Padlocks are often used to secure storage sheds, lockers, or unattached storage rooms. While padlocks might be sufficient, these locks are not as durable or secure as digital locks—or standard lock and key.

Reprogramming Your Safe

Safes come in all shapes and sizes and provide added security for both home and business owners. If you buy a safe secondhand, it is wise to have the locks professionally reprogrammed—or to replace the hardware and/or electronics altogether. The new safe will come ready to go, but we can always help with initial programming.

Action Locksmiths provides advanced lock and key, or keyless access for Toronto home and business owners. We are available for scheduled upgrades, as well as 24-hour emergency services.
