This is Why it’s so Important to Choose a Credible Locksmith

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
With city inhabitants relying on locksmiths to help them get out of dire situations, these locksmiths need to be reputable. But recently, the residents of Minnesota have had unsettling and potentially dangerous encounters with the head locksmith from Metro Lockout.

When Sue Heroff called Todd Shiber of the otherwise trusted company to fix her car tire, he demanded she stay inside as he completed the task, going so far as to prod her with his jack handle. Heroff grew fearful very quickly, afraid Shiber would hurt her.

Another customer, Zach DuBois, recently had a similar experience with Shiber, whom he called to unlock his vehicle. Shiber reportedly removed his headlight and swung it around to the point where it flew off and hit the ground. Luckily, DuBois’s neighbours helped put a stop to Shiber’s outrageous behaviours.

There were two more notable occurrences in which Shiber argued with a customer and intentionally crashed his van into the car, damaging the front of it, and in which Shiber pointed his screwdriver towards his customer and yelled at him.

These events, in addition to a few others, have earned Shiber criminal charges, and his case is to be taken to court. Though this situation may seem shocking to outsiders, it wasn’t all that unpredictable, considering that Minnesota has not put license requirements into place for locksmiths.

Even if your area doesn’t make locksmith licensing mandatory, it’s extremely important to do as much research as possible before phoning up just any company. You may be in a state of emergency, but taking the extra time to find a credible locksmith is well worth keeping yourself safe.

Full House Lottery Suffers its Third Security Mishap this Year

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
The 23,000 customers who purchased digital lottery tickets from Edmonton’s Full House Lottery from February 23rd to May 2nd are being warned that the names and addresses on their credit cards may have been stolen by hackers who infiltrated the website.

Not only are these ticket buyers affected, but the over 5000 that purchased house raffle tickets are also at risk. This occurrence followed a similar credit card information exposure on February 22nd, and nearly one month before that, a separate incident allowed hackers to see a digital list of past ticket buyers.

Taking preventive measures, Full House Lottery temporarily stopped their digital ticket counter and transferred the transactions to a safe server. Soon afterward, the police force got involved, and all customers received apology emails.

It’s possible that hackers collected all information from several cards, including each code and expiration date. Buyers who have detected suspicious activity related to their bank accounts should notify their branch as soon as possible to prevent further financial abuse.

Most affected consumers were patient and understanding upon discovering their personal information had been compromised, though lottery officials are wondering how it will affect ticket sales, the money from which is donated to health organizations in need.

Full House Lottery and its loyalists should exercise caution going forward, and the foundation should look into protecting both itself and the people it serves.

Tablet Vs. Smartphone Security

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
When we think mobile security, we think smartphones. Since these mini computers have become such an essential part of our everyday lives, it’s no wonder that personal security, in relation to these devices, has become such a major concern. Recent news even revealed that Android has officially beat out Windows as the most used system in relation to Internet use!

Tablets have also taken on a greater role in many people’s homes and/or businesses. Since we still don’t use tablets as much as our smartphones, we often don’t pay enough attention to their security features and we would all do well to brush up on the cybersecurity elements of these devices.

We’ll walk you through some steps you can take to up your tablet’s security so that no matter where you are, hackers and cyber criminals will be kept away.

Apps - Be careful as to what apps you’re downloading. Only download reputable apps from official app stores so you don’t expose your device to malware.

Secure your device - Choose a hard-to-guess password and be sure to change it every once in a while. If you sometimes use your device at the office or in any other public spot, be sure that the auto lock function is on and will activate in a short time-frame.

Add a security feature that’s unique to your device - Apply a security solution that is specific to your tablet or system. Features include geo-tracking, locking remotely, being able to wipe your device remotely and so much more.

Wi-Fi - It’s best not to automatically connect to public Wi-Fi. This might be a bit of a hassle at times but it is truly worth it as you’ll have full power over your tablet’s security.

Be on the lookout - Whether you’re surfing the net, shopping online, or banking from your tablet, always be on the lookout! Ignore emails you don’t recognize, prompting you to click on a short link as these can easily be viruses. Another red flag is friends sending you texts or even messages through social media messenger apps asking you to check out a promotion or sale that sounds fake.

We hope these tips were helpful with regards to you being more cyber-aware about your tablet!

Home Security could be Forever Changed with an all-seeing Box

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
Cognitive Systems, a Waterloo-based security company founded in 2014, has recently developed something that could revolutionize the way we protect our homes. The device is called Aura, and it detects intruders by monitoring the movements of the beings inside the house.

Before this, only cameras, sensors, and a few microphones were available to the public for domicile security, but they need to be strategically placed, and even the newest ones aren’t all that advanced. What separates Aura from other products is the way in which it senses motion. You can install it in your bathroom and have no privacy concerns.

Developing a product that wirelessly picks up movement has been an ongoing process for several firms. While some of these products get a glimpse behind opaque walls and respond to voice commands, Cognitive Systems’ Aura is made of two stationaries, one main and one collaborator. The collaborator alerts the homeowner through an app about any movement in the house and the frequency of that movement.

Categorizing motion is an accomplishment Aura has yet to achieve, though it is programmed to filter out inanimate objects falling or swaying in the wind as well as pet movement. The device also struggles with converting movement into visual information, settling for a line graph setup for the time being.

Because Aura has not yet been tested in a home, it’s hard to say whether or not it’s ideal for the safety-conscious homeowner. Considering it’s equipped with a radio chip that can detect signals up to 4Ghz and can separate exterior movements from interior ones, Cognitive Systems expects Aura to aid in both home security and spectrum.

The importance of spectrum in particular is growing at a rapid rate, meaning Aura’s chip could contribute to the wireless network market as well. For now, the device will tackle home security only, selling for $684.77 CAD.

Although the product is expensive and the target audience is small, Cognitive Systems is confident that Aura will appeal to both homeowners and associate companies willing to pay the price.

Home Safety for Senior Citizens

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
Senior citizens often prefer to maintain their independence for as long as possible, but living alone can put them in a dangerous spot if an emergency occurs. A great way to ensure your senior family member’s safety is to set up an automatic security system for their home.

Some security systems can detect empty rooms and switch off lights or running devices, keeping the residence safe and energy-conservative. They can also notify homeowners when there are potential threats outside the house or when guests exit the building.

Surveillance cameras are extremely useful for checking on the home, inside and out. They can be connected to your smartphone so you can see the footage remotely and ensure the seniors in your life are safe.

Certain home security systems can call 9-1-1 in emergency situations, as the home’s senior residents may not be able to do so. Additionally, if a break-and-enter is attempted on the home, the alarms go off and the security company receives an automatic update. Better yet, if your senior family member wishes to move into a new home, most security companies will aid in transporting the system to the designated location.

With simple ways of keeping your senior family member safe while still granting them their autonomy, home security systems are the way to go. Feel free to contact us to learn about our various available options!

How to Lock your Bike the Right Way

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
The majority of bike thefts unsurprisingly occur in public places, and you could be the next victim. To protect your bike, follow these locking tips to ensure your bike’s security every time.

Register your bike with your city as soon as you can. You’ll receive a labelled sticker to attach to the frame, which helps ward off potential thieves and distinguish your bike from others if it ever goes missing.

When you go to park your bike, choose a safe location with good lighting; bike racks and grounded posts near stores are good options. Make sure to bring the bike’s frame the nearest it can get to the post you’re locking it to. Secure your bike with at least two locks, preferably a cable lock and a small U-lock, for added protection. Picking one lock is hard enough, so it’s unlikely someone will try to pick two.

Station and lock your bike correctly. Feed your U-lock through the triangular part of the frame, the back wheel, and the section of the post you’re locking it to before clamping it shut. Remove and store any easily stolen saddles, lights, or bags. Now you’re good to go.

Whenever you need to lock your bike, avoid securing any single part of the bike on its own. Locking only your frame leaves your wheels up for grabs, just as securing only your wheels leaves your frame unprotected. Don’t lock just your seat, either - it can be removed and left behind with the lock, releasing your bike from its previously secured position.

If your bike still goes missing despite following these rules, notify your local police station immediately. But if you’re playing it safe, there’s no need to worry.

Beloved Locksmith and Practical Joker Dies at 83

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
After decades of cracking codes and cracking jokes, Phil “Drill Bits” Hobbs died in his hometown of Meriden. He dedicated his life to picking locks, making people smile, and teaching them about religion, having started Phil’s Lockshop and joining the First Assembly of God.

Born in the town of Maine, he went to Farmington High School and broke the state’s pole vault record, maintaining his status for over a decade. He wasn’t limited to just track and field, however, playing football and softball before eventually serving in the army. Post-war, Hobbs finally turned his focus to locksmithing.

Hobbs opened many a vault during his lifetime, including a notoriously tricky one dubbed the Mosler Monster in a loan services location. When he wasn’t dealing with locks, he enjoyed using humourous devices like false needles, jumpscare pop-up books, and coins nailed to the floor that confused unsuspecting victims.

Additionally, Hobbs began a Royal Rangers program for boys of the Assembly of God churches, reaching out to all corners of Southern New England. He had many roles with the church, and even helped construct the building upon his arrival to the city.

Phil Hobbs is survived by his wife Barbara, along with their children and grandchildren. The Hobbs family has maintained ownership of Phil’s Lockshop, and are still running the store today.

Hackers Develop Tools to Tap into Computer Systems

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
Excitement among software hackers is palpable upon the introduction of several new shortcuts that allow access to Microsoft Windows computers, though owners of said computers are understandably concerned.

It seems that The Shadow Brokers, a popular group in the hacker community, is responsible for seizing these hacks from the NSA, whose workers are required to tear holes in software for spying purposes.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time this has happened. The first round of hacks was leaked by the same group in August 2016. This second hit, however, may well be the most detrimental hit to the NSA that we know of.

Releasing the shortcuts at the start of Easter weekend was strategic on the group’s part, as many Windows owners will be preoccupied with cooking, cleaning, and socializing, while beginner hackers dubbed “script kiddies” test out their newfound skills.

Investigators claim that some of these new releases could threaten the security of several different Windows systems. For now, all active Microsoft users are urged to take a break from their computers until the dust has settled.

How to Avoid being Scammed by a Fake Locksmith

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
Imagine this Situation: Locked out of your home or car, you are in a pickle and call the first locksmith you come across in a google search. But this could be both a bad and expensive idea.

In fact, you could have just called a rogue locksmith and there’s no way of knowing that until they show up.

It has unfortunately happened where homeowners or car owners are taken advantage of and have had to pay hundreds to access their home.

The Lesson? Beware of prices that look too good to be true. What may happen is a locksmith will inform you that the price has gone up because it will take longer than expected.

Normally, this is not the case and getting into your car should not cost you hundreds of dollars. To protect yourself, make sure your locksmith has a uniform and a car marked with company logos. They are more likely to be trustworthy. You can also check reputations online, make sure you drill them about the cost and even better, check to see if they are part of an association of locksmiths or from a reputable company. Membership requires following a certain set of ethics.

Finding the Best Locksmith for You

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
When you’re locked out of your house, the last thing you’re thinking about is how much a locksmith will cost. But if you’re charged more than you expect after the fact, you won’t be too pleased. So how do you know which locksmith to hire to make sure you get good service without breaking the bank?

First, get a quote or two. Be sure to ask the locksmith what the price will cover - many customers are surprised to find that the charge only covers the service, not the parts used, and are charged more than anticipated. If you’re short on time, ask for the names of the company representatives as well as all terms and conditions before signing anything.

While discussing the price of the job you want to be completed, get an idea of any additional charges that could be added should something go wrong. If you’re still satisfied with the price after learning about potential extra fees, see if the company has insurance in case of property damage. It’s also a good idea to evaluate the quality of service by looking for official company vehicles, positive customer input, and good overall business maintenance.

Request the locksmith’s ID and business card when they arrive, and in turn, offer them your own; mutual trust is important, even in short-term business transactions. Ask questions whenever necessary once the locksmith has evaluated the situation and proposed a solution, only agreeing to what you’re comfortable with.

If you have a bad experience with a typically well-praised locksmith, be more thorough in your future searches. Look for one with certifications including formal training, standardized test completion, and an ethics code they must abide by.

Follow all of the above suggestions and you’ll drastically increase your chances of finding a great locksmith for a reasonable price, even if you’re in a rush.

Robbers Try But Fail To Crack Safe of BURS

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
What’s making news today is a frightful scene that occurred at Tlokweng International border that involved Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) workers. What they discovered was that thieves whose fundamental goal was to break into their safes, rummaged through their workplaces, but thankfully they were not successful in breaking into the safes. Luckily none of the workers were present so no one was injured.

On Tuesday morning it was reported that as workers of both units were accounting for undertaking, they discovered the disaster that had occurred. Their office entryways broken completely unlatched and found that there had been gatecrashers who had attempted to interfere their way into their safes however luckily couldn't and were additionally discouraged by the inescapable stunt. Clearly the robbers were not as successful as they wanted to be or very smart for the matter.

Drake Ramaeba commented on the reports. He is the BURS Tlokweng Border gate Customs Manager. He stated, “It was evident that they were quite curious to get into the rooms and that they would stop at nothing by using dynamite, but they evidently failed. This hasn’t been the first time so they knew what they were getting into and were prepared hence the strong rooms.

Robson Maleka, the Tlokweng police headquarters Commander Superintendent mentioned how the incident was strange. The case was reported to their office and the details were confirmed. Cases like these although strange, are common. It’s important to make sure they can’t break into safes and that a safe workplace environment is established.

"It would seem that whoever was there, attempted to open the safes yet fizzled and they wound up going back on their intensions of ransacking both spots," he said.

Since the robbers failed to open the safes, they gave up and took off and didn’t bother robbing the other areas.

Maleka said the robbers have not been caught so unfortunately no arrests have been made. This of course will not stop the police from finding the crooks and from further investigating the case.

Germans Lose Faith in Banks

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
Retail customers can expect charges from many German savings banks and institutions of finance just for holding their money in the aftermath of an announcement from the CEO of Deutsche Bank, John Cryan. Cryan stated what many interpret to be an early warning sign of monetary repression across Europe. It isn’t spelled out any clearer than “fatal consequences” for savers, to use his terms exactly.

German cooperative savings bank, Raiffeneisen Gmund am Tegernsee, located in a small Bavarian village was the first to make the announcement to customers that merely holding their cash will come at a charge. Consequently, home safes are rising as a popular alternative to risky savings accounts at negative interest rates. German savers seem to be wasting no time to put their savings in something more secure than grandma’s shoebox and not as risky as the bank.

As interest-rates plunge to abysmally negative depths, Germans are the first to follow in the footsteps blazed by the Japanese just over a year ago. Japanese consumers started stashing their cash at home upon the introduction of negative interest rates there.

Following the wisdom of basic mathematics, which proves zero is greater in value than a negative, home safes are looking more attractive than negative interest rates with additional charges for the mere safekeeping of cash — taxes added.

Cue a 25 per cent spike in safe sales from the largest safe manufacturer in Burg-Waechter KG. Increases are pushing manufacturers to limit. There are now waiting lists for safe-deposit boxes in many of Germany’s metropolises. And it’s not your average cast of tin-foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists acting contrary to the European Central Bank’s policies, but the banks themselves.

It is reported that financial institutions such as the retail, savings and other investment banks are hoarding more cash along with some gold bars in preparation for an unclear economic future. The fallout of bankers announcing negative interest rates shows no end in near sight, and those with their eyes to the horizon are noting the benefits of stocking their savings in a place more secure than under their mattresses.

Some are opting to keep it in a safe-deposit box at the bank for extra security, but fees for this service can be avoided by investing in a quality home safe. Paying to save at a retail bank is nothing less than ridiculous according to one Munich-based entrepreneur. Many citizens echoed his sentiments when asked about the new bank charges for holding savings.

In contrast to an array of European and North American nations where credit cards are often taken for granted as another form of cash, regardless of a negative balance, Germans are adhering to the old tried and true adage of their elders that, “Only cash is real.”

And they seem to mean it, at almost a 2:1 ratio of cash transactions comprising 80 per cent compared to U.S citizens.

Maybe we can learn from their foresight.

Truck & Locksmith Tools taken by Thief

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
The Calgary Police Service and the RCMP are asking for public assistance in tracking down a person who stole a locksmith truck from Airdrie and then stole equipment that is used in making keys for properties managed by the City of Calgary.

Owned by Locksmith ABOE, who is a contractor with the Calgary Housing Company, the truck was taken from a parking lot in southwest Airdrie Monday night.

While the truck was found Tuesday morning on Township Road 264 in Balzac, a number of items were missing from the vehicle, including some equipment and tools that can be used to manufacture keys. In addition, a number of sensitive documents about several CHC buildings were also taken.

Fortunately, the missing documents do not contain any personal information such as tenant names, according to City of Calgary officials. However, the documents and the equipment create the possibility the culprits could manufacture keys for specific CHC properties.

Because of this danger, tenants are being notified about what happened.

“Above all else, we are focusing on the security and safety of our tenants,” said Calgary Housing Company President Sarah Woodgate. “Currently we are partnering with law enforcement, neighbourhoods, the Fire Department and other partners to reach out to tenants and offer support. We want to make sure that there is no risk to their safety and take precautions prevent future breaches like these.

According to the CHC, this is the first time such a theft has occurred. The CHC currently manages 7,300 units with 25,000 in about 211 properties scattered throughout the city. Officials aren’t sure about the number of tenants that would be impacted by the breach, but are working to change the locks on many of them.

They don’t have any estimate on how many units are in need of having the locks changed, but the work should last six weeks. There are also no details about where the money for the work will come from.

And for the time being, authorities are also boosting the number of security on CHC properties to help keep residents safe and they are working closely with tenants who have raised specific security concerns.

Officials have also declared their intention to start working more with contractors about their processes for storing and handling information.

The Safest Places to Travel Solo to

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
Ever have wanderlust? You’re not alone! If you’ve been itching to get away and to do it solo, you’re in luck! Thanks to various statistical sources, we’ve compiled a list of the top safest places in the world to travel to alone. Find yourself, reflect, or have an adventure in one of these destinations:

1) Auckland, New Zealand

Last year, this country was rated as the #4 most peaceful country worldwide and with good reason. Danger here is slim to none due to how open-minded everyone is along with the fact that their police force is one of the most trusted in the world. Basically, less corruption = less danger. Take a ride on the ferry to an island close by and see the youngest volcanos of the area.

2) Sydney, Australia

Isn’t it funny that a place that used to house criminals was named #5 safest place in the world in 2015? Sydney is unapologetically unique—walk along the Sydney Harbour and visit the Sydney Opera House. Soak up the sun on Bondi beach and be dazzled by the serene waves.

3) Osaka, Japan

Although Tokyo was named the #1safest place in the world, Osaka was #3 when it came to safe travels. Japan is both safe to live in and travel to. If you’re in Japan, you’ll probably notice that many women feel comfortable traveling alone late at night in the subway. Locals will often leave their belongings unattended in a coffee shop for example, without a care in the world. Sumiyoshi-taisha, one of Japan’s most ancient shrines is testament to this type of atmosphere. It features 3 gods as the Deities of Borders, who are believed to protect travelers!

4) Barcelona, Spain

Spain’s romantic culture, delicious foods, and stunning architecture are a draw for any travel buff. Gaudi’s famous Sagrada Familia cathedral is a must-see! Although the country was only ranked #15 in terms of safety, when traveling, pickpocketing is essentially the biggest threat.

5) Amsterdam, Netherlands

The #5 safest city in the world is also where drugs and prostitution are legal and many have argued whether this contributes to its safety. Take in the colourful architecture while biking and discover Van Gogh masterpieces while visiting the Rembrandt museum.

What Did The Locksmith Find In The Old Safe?

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
Vaults and safes are probably the first things that come to mind when we think of keeping our personal belongings safe. However, there are always going to be situations in which time passes, the owner of a safe passes away, or perhaps moves, and a safe is left forgotten. Although forgotten for the time being, it sits there, and sometimes, it can sit there for decades.

A safe cracker by the name of “Unkapier” took a crack at a sealed vault that had been considered missing for years and years. No one could track down the owner. No one knew what was inside. However, when Unkapier took a crack at opening it, the contents proved to be very shocking indeed. Getting inside proved to be only a minor challenge for Unkapier, who may have simply worked out the combination.

Upon getting the initial door open, Unkapier was struck by the discovery of a second door behind the first one. Opening the second door proved to be easy enough, revealing a number of drawers that might be used to hold jewels, important documents, and similar valuables.

Unkapier discovered several hundred dollars, including several extremely rare two dollar bills. There were apparently other treasures inside the safe but Unkapier refuses to reveal the rest of the contents.

Trudeau’s Home is Getting a 2-Million Dollar Security Upgrade

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
The federal government has put forth plans to spend approximately two million dollars on a comprehensive series of essential security updates to the home of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family. Rideau Cottage is getting a 1.6-million dollar upgrade from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The National Capital Commission (NCC), the group responsible for Canada’s official resources, is going to provide the rest of the funds.

Still waiting for parliamentary approval, the request takes up a small portion of the 101-page supplementary estimates document that was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday.

Trudeau has chosen to live in Rideau Cottage, which can be found on the grounds of Rideau Hall. This has been the alternative to the traditional address at 24 Sussex, which is currently undergoing some very significant repairs.

When asked why the security measures are only now being applied to Rideau Cottage, the RCMP pointed out that the house is traditionally not designed for a Prime Minister. When used, it has often been designated to someone else in government. Someone who is obviously not on the same level as the Prime Minister, which is a job that comes with a vast larray of complex security concerns. The RCMP further elaborated on this by saying that it has simply proven to be a challenge to bring the home completely up to the standards of security for a Prime Minister. This is due to the fact that the house was never designed to be used for a Prime Minister.

At the same time, the RCMP has not indicated any specifics regarding what the money is going to be spent on. Built well over a century ago, Rideau Cottage has a grand history behind it. As you may or may not know, it is indeed a historically-recognized site. However, some speculate as to what the money will be used for, which the RCMP has indicated as information that will be delivered “in due course.” Others point to the fact that the projected costs for renovations to 24 Sussex could run in excess of thirty-eight million dollars.

Locksmith Tips

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/

When it comes to home safety tips, you can’t get a better source than a locksmith! We work with a wide variety of commercial and residential properties to address a litany of security concerns and demands. Whether you are a new homeowner who wants to take care of your new, somewhat intimidating investment, or if you have owned a home for a long time and simply want to brush up on home security measures, you might want to take note of the following tips:
  • Regarding New Homes: When you buy a new home, replace or rekey the locks. You honestly don’t know what the previous owner might have done in terms of making copies, losing copies, giving out copies, and so forth.
  • Deadbolts: A deadbolt is an essential component to protecting your home but you’re going to want to make sure this item is installed correctly.
  • Windows and Locks: In the event that you have a window near your door, avoid the deadbolt. In situations such as these, use a double cylinder lock that requires a key.
  • Finding a Locksmith: If you are on the hunt for a locksmith, there are several things you are going to want to keep in mind. Research any locksmith you come across carefully. Learn about their reputation in the community. Check out reviews on consumer websites. In the end, you want someone who is affordable, professional, efficient, and reliable.
  • Strong Doors: When it comes to the doors that separate your home from the outside world, you want solid wood, or you want steel. Anything less than that is something intruders can destroy and toss aside with ease.

Ransomware Used to Lock Hotel Guests in Their Room

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
A group of hackers recently used ransomware to trap a number of hotel guests in their room. Taking control of the central key management system at Romantik Seehotel Jägerwir, the hackers forced guests of the hotel out of their rooms. The discovery that hackers were behind the incident came when several guests of the Alps hotel realized that they could no longer use their card keys to return to their rooms.

The reservation system was also hit by the hackers, in addition to the cash desk system. All of this was done in the name of a $1605 ransom demand, which was to be paid in bitcoin. Left without any options, the hotel had no choice but to pay the ransom.

The hotel reacted quickly in the aftermath. Not only was the system replaced, but some computers were also delinked. This was done to ensure essential services would be able to endure, in the event of an attack in the future.

This story is unfortunately not a singular event. Ransomware attacks continue to be problematic for businesses of all shapes and sizes, and all across the world. A hospital in 2016 had its patient records hijacked, attached to a ransom demand of $17, 000. A university in Canada was recently forced to pay out a ransom of $20, 000 in order to get their hacked network back.

Obamas' New Home Will Undergo a Security Renovation

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
After spending the past eight years in the White House with tons of security, it makes sense that the Obama family would want to make sure that their new home is as safe as possible. They will stay in the Kalorama neighborhood in D.C. while their daughter Sasha finishes high school. The home that they will be moving into is a $5.3 million dollar home that will be getting a number of security upgrades in order to make it as secure as possible. Moving is a headache for everyone, but for past presidents and their families, it can be even more difficult to find a suitable home and make sure that it is safe.

The major security upgrade that will be the most noticeable is a large brick wall that will be built in front of the house. Obviously, this is being built to deter anyone coming onto the property uninvited. Another change in the home is that the garage will be changed into an office. People everywhere have their fingers crossed for an Obama memoir and perhaps this is where that writing will occur. The Obama family has always had impeccable style and this nine bedroom, eight and a half bath home will no doubt be lovely when they are moved in. Neighbors are said to include Jeff Bezos and Ivanka Trump.

Locksmith Builds His Own Aircraft to Travel to Work

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
Does your commute to and from work each day leave you frazzled? Do you ever wish you could just fly to the other side of town and skip over all the congestion and bumper-to-bumper traffic? Well, Frantisek Hadrava, a locksmith from a small village in the Czech Republic, turned this wish into reality by building his own personal aircraft for his routine commute.

It took Hadrava two years to build his beloved Vampira, an ultralight airplane this is built with a wood frame. It is quite similar to the Minimax Ultralight aircraft, except the Vampira has no cover over the cockpit, leaving the pilot exposed to the elements.

Most people are surprised to learn the Vampira is actually fuel efficient, saving precious time and money. Sounds too good to be true, right?

Aircrafts go through rigorous tests to be able to fly within local zones and the pilot must be certified to fly through the federal aviation department. Parking is no doubt an issue since most cities wouldn’t be able to accommodate even the smallest of planes.

Windows 10 can Lock your PC

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
At the moment, Microsoft is working on a new feature for Windows 10 that will automatically lock and then secure your device if the O.S. picks up that the individual has stepped away from the machine. The feature has been called Dynamic Lock in a variety of recent test-build efforts. Internally, the company has referred to this feature as “Windows Goodbye”, which certainly makes sense.

Presently, Microsoft utilizes something known as a Windows Hello camera to allow Windows 10 users to log into their devices with only their faces. This would definitely change things.

At the moment, individuals can use the Winkey+L combination to lock and secure their devices. It is believed that streamlining the concept with the Dynamic Lock feature represents an easier, safer method for protecting devices. It is likely that Windows is going to include the Dynamic Lock feature within a major release. In all likelihood, this is going to be in the April Windows 10 Creators Update.

Augmented reality games are becoming increasingly popular as evidenced by the success of the recent Pokemon Go. Imagine applying that concept to finding your keys, your remote, or anything else you tend to lose on a regular basis. Bluetooth item trackers are not a new invention. Both Tile and Protag’s Duet have proven to be effective and popular.

However, no one has ever thought to turn that tracking capability into a game. Pixie endeavours to change that, turning the concept of a Bluetooth item tracker into something that functions as a game that can be pretty fun to play. Pixie functions in the same way that products like Tile or Protag’s Duet do, but Pixie adds augmented reality to the mix. The game will show you the general location of whatever is attached to your Pixie clip. Finding your item then becomes a matter of playing a game of Hot and Cold.

A neat feature within Pixie is the product’s ability to communicate with multiple devices. At the same time, it is important to keep in mind that despite Pixie’s claims, the product does not function exactly like GPS. What it actually does is work like any standard Bluetooth device. This means you will need to at least be within a range of around forty feet.

Pixie is already drawing a good deal of attention for this product. They are also expanding into some pretty interesting areas. For example, they are manufacturing an iPhone case in which the trackers are built right into the case. What’s even better is that these products are going to come with a battery life that will extend to an impressive twelve months.

You will have the ability to purchase a pack of two (including a phone case) for forty-nine dollars, as well as the opportunity to purchase a pack of four (which also includes a phone case) for ninety-nine dollars.

August Home Allows use of Smart Locks for Doors Internationally

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
August Home is a company that is well-known for its internet-connected smart locks. This product already works with most of the door locks that you will generally come across within the United States and Canada. However, the company has yet to create a solution that can be used in conjunction with a style of lock that is known as the Mortise. This lock represents a smaller market share within the United States, but it is in fact a very popular type of lock overseas. This is particularly true in Europe.

Things are about to change. August Home has indicated that they plan to create a new smart lock that will have the ability to work with Mortise locks. August Home CEO Jason Johnson has indicated that they are already seeing their locks appear in countries beyond North America, which is currently the only place in which August Home manufactures and distributes its products. As their products continue to appear in countries around the world, August Home hopes to continue making moves that will eventually allow them to distribute and release products around the world.

In the meantime, August Home is working on a partnership with Logitech Pop, which will include creating a very simple, but profoundly effective button. The main purpose of this button will be to give people the ability to turn off TVs, lights, and even lock doors, with the simple push of a button.

In the end, August Home hopes to continue working on becoming a more open platform, as users look for ways to better protect their homes.

Atlas Recall Gives your Mac a Photographic Memory

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
This Seattle based startup company, Atlas Informatics, sees its mission as “if you’ve seen it, you can search for it.” Atlas Recall could become a highly important app (free, at the moment) for Mac users. This digital search software doesn’t just remember text summaries of or a link to a site you visited recently, but reproduces “what you viewed.”

Yes, when you search for a previously viewed site, Atlas Recall returns “visual thumbnails” of what you saw when you visited the site. How? This app indexes everything that you’ve looked at and snaps a picture of what you viewed previously. When you search for it, the app returns the image to you.

How Does It Sort Your Search Results?

Atlas Recall organizes the sites you visited today, last week, or last year with most recent first, divided by timeframe, and oldest last. This app will reproduce the content relevant to your search terms.  Atlas Recall doesn’t just reproduce web pages, as it includes emails, chats, documents, or anything else you viewed in the reasonable past.

It then sorts and lists (displays) them in order of when you looked at them. Atlas Recall is designed to capture these items from Safari and Chrome browsers with a Mac, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and PDFs including web pages.

How Does It Work?

Atlas Recall captures data from your Mac, encrypts it, and stores it in the cloud. Hence, you’ll need to be connected to the ‘Net to use this app. However, storing data in the cloud allows you to make digital searches encompassing multiple computers.

This complement to major search engines, like Google, will even display results in a panel “next door” to the main Google search results page. The app is not intended to render Google or other major search engines obsolete.

Rather it’s designed to support these primary search engines, reminding users that they may want to visit other web pages or documents they’ve previously seen.  Atlas Recall thoroughly has been tested in beta mode and has proven to work well.

Conclusion

Although Atlas Recall works, not surprisingly, it has some limitations. For now, it only works on Mac machines and iOS mobile devices. The iOS application only points to those items you’ve visited on your computer, not on your iPhone.

Further, you must install the app, which will not record your visits prior to downloading the Atlas Recall software. To enhance your security, you can erase items from your Mac photographic memory, such as signing in to your bank account.

Regardless of these limitations, Atlas Recall is a worthwhile addition to your recall arsenal, particularly while it’s still free.

Thieves Get Stuck on Locksmith's Doors

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/
Since thieves were unable to break the locks established by the business Lock and Key Solutions, they chose to go for the window instead. They were successful, but Maritsa Gouws, a Miss South Africa 2016 contestant, says that she is nonetheless grateful that her family is safe. This would be in spite of the fact that thieves successfully broke into the family company.

While there is no question that the locks clearly did their job, this story points strongly to the importance of comprehensive security solutions. This would mean taking steps to ensure that when a home or place of business is protected, that protection is provided on every possible level. There are several fascinating elements to this story that are worth keeping in mind.

Thieves Rob Locksmith Company

Found at the corner of Peter Kerchhoff Street and Boom Street, Lock and Key Solutions had recently gone through some renovations. New carpets were fitted to establishment that Friday, just prior to the robbery in question. After the robbery, Gouws indicated that she had left 2 laptops in her office, in addition to an external hard drive, when she left the office that Friday. Upon returning to the office on Saturday, she found the office to be in a state of disarray. A number of items had been lifted from the scene, as well.

Commenting on the matter further, Gouws mentioned that because the thieves took items that were set aside in (seemingly) secured locations, it would seem as though the thieves knew exactly where to go for the merchandise they wanted. From the items that were stolen from the business, Gouws mentioned that a variety of special, sensitive material were on the devices that were stolen. This would include information about the family business, information about the family itself, personal photographs, and much more. While Gouws indicated that the business is safe, which includes any and all sensitive information about their clients, the real problem involves the personal photographs and other items that were on the devices in question. Gouws made it clear that replacing all of these things would prove to be very difficult indeed.

Gouws also said that she wasn’t terribly worried about any potential threat to her family or place of business. The company is already in the process of restoring all of the information the company needs. What worries her the most involves the personal photos and other items. As mentioned before, replacing any of those things is going to prove to be extremely challenging.

While the incident did leave her shaken up, Gouws did suggest that the events have left her with the desire to be more “vigilant.” There are always things one can do to reasonably increase security with their home or business.

Ideas from Mike Holmes – How to Make your Home Secure and Healthy in Winter

http://www.actionlocksmiths.ca/blog/56-ideas-from-mike-holmes-how-to-make-your-home-secure-and-healthy-in-winter.htmlHow do you cope with short days and long nights characterized by a massive drop in temperatures? Winter is here and there is no way to avoid the chill. Preparations can, however, help to ensure you are warm, dry and safe

Suggestions

The chimney should be inspected by an expert annually. This area tends to accumulate creosote as well as soot. There will also be cracks and birds’ nests to contend with. The risk of fire is a real one in the event a combusting log starts a chimney fire.

Poisonous fumes like carbon monoxide can find their way inside your house via blockages or cracks. The best option is to have the chimney checked not only on the inside but on the outside. Bricks become broken and the mortar can crumble leading to costly repairs.

Fireplaces

Regarding fireplaces, the damper can take up lots of your space. If it does not close, open or seal, then you will be limited in terms of space. If you are not using it, always ensure that it is closed to prevent the warm air from escaping. The re-usable dampers, for instance, can let out air when they are supposed to be air tight. Watch out for any warping that may occur. A better alternative would be the use of chimney plugs that are not only re-usable but can also be inflated and seal the flue.

To make the seal in the fireplace invisible, use a decorative screen. You should do this when you intend to close it when off for the season.

Fire Cracks

A wood stockpile can make for a warm night, so make sure you stock some. Power breakouts can ruin your nights, so make sure you have some spare wood with you, and go for the fast-burning kind if you want to see less pollution such as smoke. It creates a viable source of radiant heat. The gas fireplace can be used instead but make sure to have it inspected to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Dealing with the Gutter

Get rid of the garbage that gets in the way in winter. There are leaves and all manner of trash that can enter the eaves trough. Watch out for melting snow causing water back up in the roof and shingles.

Finally, have the furnace inspected to save on costs and energy.
